Introductory Email Guide

How to structure a strong introductory email to college coaches.

Reaching out to college coaches is much easier when you approach the email with a clear structure and purpose. A strong introductory email should do three things well. It should clearly introduce who you are, briefly explain why you are reaching out and what you bring to the table, and outline what you hope happens next.

Start With a Clear Introduction

Open the email in a professional and respectful way. Address the coach by name and quickly provide the basic information they need to understand who you are. This should include your high school, where you are from, your graduation year, and your position or event. Keep this section short and to the point.

Share Why You Are Reaching Out

In the main part of the email, focus on your strengths as both a student and an athlete. This may include your GPA, key skills, measurable metrics, or any accomplishments that help you stand out. This is also where you can briefly mention why you are interested in that specific school or program. Personalizing this part of the message shows the coach you have done your research and are not sending the same email to every school.

Explain What Comes Next

End the email by setting clear expectations. Let the coach know how you plan to follow up or what action you are hoping for. This could be asking them to watch your highlight video, reviewing your schedule, or connecting on a future call. Being clear about next steps helps keep the conversation moving.

Always include links to your most recent highlight video, your current game schedule, and any other materials you reference in the email. You may also choose to include your current coach’s contact information, as college coaches often reach out to them for additional insight.
