Creating a Highlight Video

A simple guide to creating an effective recruiting video that gets noticed by college coaches.

Creating a highlight video does not need to be complicated. You do not need expensive equipment or advanced editing software to create something effective. A simple setup and clear footage are more than enough.

The goal of a highlight video is to make it easy for a college coach to evaluate you quickly.

Simple Equipment Is Enough

A phone works perfectly fine for filming a highlight video. As long as the video is clear and steady, it can be just as effective as footage filmed with professional cameras.

Focus on good lighting, a stable camera position, and a clear view of the field. Using a tripod or keeping the phone steady makes a big difference.

Film From the Right Angles

Camera angle matters. The correct angle allows coaches to see your mechanics and movement clearly.

If you are a hitter, record from the open side so your swing path and mechanics are easy to see. If you are a pitcher, record from behind home plate so coaches can see your arm action and pitch movement.

Keep the Video Clean and Simple

There is no need for music, graphics, or fancy titles. Coaches are focused on evaluation, not production.

Your name, graduation year, position, and any metrics can be listed briefly at the beginning. Keep everything else straightforward and easy to watch.

Use Short, Focused Clips

Individual clips should be short and to the point. There is no need to show entire at bats or long pauses between plays.

For hitters, only include clips where the ball is put in play. For pitchers, focus on full deliveries and competitive pitches.

Keep the Entire Video Short

Try to keep the entire highlight video two minutes or less. Shorter videos are more likely to be watched all the way through.

Place your best clips at the beginning. Coaches often decide quickly whether they want to keep watching.

Final Thoughts

A strong highlight video is clear, honest, and easy to evaluate. It does not need to be perfect. It simply needs to show who you are as a player.

When done the right way, a highlight video can be one of the most effective tools in the recruiting process.
